Follow up tasks
For Requirement 3E #2: Do research on one species that was endangered, or threatened, but which has now recovered. Find out how the organism recovered, and what its new status is. Write a 100-word report on the species and email that to me.
For Requirement 3F #3: Finish up the packaging material experiment: – Put the four bags in the sun (indoors is ok, just make sure it’s sunny spot) – On Monday, open the bags and stir carefully. Add 1/2 cup of water (same as what we put yesterday) and close bags – On Friday, open up the bags and look at the packing material with magnifying glass. – Email the counselor some pictures and answer these:
1. Which materials decomposed? 2. Which do you think are biodegradable and which are non-biodegradable? 3. Explain the differences between the biodegradable and non-biodegradable ones. 4. Make a statement about which materials would be good for packing and reducing solid waste.
For Requirement 4a: Mark off a plot of 4 square yards in a study area that has a different ecosystem than what we studied at the Midway. For example: the beach, Vasona reservoir, or on a hike in the hills where there is a forest environment. Count the number of species found there. Estimate how much space is occupied by each plant species and the type and number of non-plant species you find. Write a short report (100-200 words) comparing the bio-diversity and population density of the two study plots. Email this report to me with a picture of the study area you picked out.
